UVC LIGHT SAFETY
Deep ultraviolet (UVC) light emitting diodes (LEDs) are an irradiation source and require important precautions to ensure safe usage. While SaniLED’s wavelength and power provide for rapid disinfection which is a desired outcome for sterilization purposes, safety precautions must be observed during operation. Safety recommendations with UVC LEDs and UVC lamps include protecting the skin, and particularly open wounds, and most importantly, the eyes from UVC radiation.
Acute (short-term) effects of UVC exposure include redness or ulceration of the skin. At high levels of exposure, these burns can be serious. For chronic (long-term) exposures, there is also a cumulative risk that depends on the amount of exposure during your lifetime. The long-term risk for large cumulative exposure to UVC light includes premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. This device is intended for commercial use only. UVC light is not intended for direct human skin disinfection. Keep out of the reach of children. When working around or with UVC devices, one should:
- Use the included UV protection glasses.
- Prescription glasses and normal safety glasses will not protect your eyes from UV exposure, so ANSI Z87 rated eyeglasses with wrap around lens to protect the side exposure is recommended and is included with your purchase.
- Cover any exposed skin using lab coats, nitrile gloves or other lab attire.

WHAT IS UV LIGHT?
Ultraviolet (UV) light is a type of electromagnetic radiation in the form of light, invisible to the human eye, that exists on the electromagnetic spectrum between X-rays and visible light. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can be classified into three types that are based on wavelength: UVA, UVB and UVC light. Nearly all the UV radiation that reaches our planet is UVA, as most of UVB and all of UVC light is absorbed by the earth’s protecting ozone layer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ultraviolet light is what makes scorpions and black-light posters glow in the dark and is responsible for summer tans and sunburns. Too much exposure to UV light, however, is damaging to living tissue and this is where UV-C light plays a role in inactivating microorganisms such as bacteria, mold, and viruses.
It is UVC light, that has the shortest wavelength and the highest energy, that can act as a disinfectant and hence the term “Germicidal UV Lamp”.
